Accountability

All members of OBS take the craft seriously or they don't stay members of OBS.  Unlike other groups, where the commitment may wane or the goal is to have as many members as possible, OBS' stars system assures every active member is working towards being the best.

about us

OBS isn't for fans or hobbyist

OBS is for aspiring and working screenwriters

Screenwriting remains one of the most difficult crafts and professions to master.  The amount of discipline and dedication it will take for one to have a successful screenwriting career exceeds the odds of a successful career in medicine, law, and even profession sports.  OBS is an all volunteer community of creatives committed to achieving their peak as storytellers.   .

Founded in the late 1980s by a group of black screenwriters at a time when few networks had diversity initiatives and not even a handful of organizations in Hollywood offered a place for black writers and creatives to network.   OBS served as a monthly gathering for information exchange, educational support, and networking.

Today, OBS serves a global community of screenwriters whose merit-based membership system assures their continued commitment.   OBS exists online with virtual meetings, events, and the occasional live event to help our members achieve their goals.

OBS Alumni have found success on primetime television, streaming platforms, and as content generators.  Writers strive to master genres as broad as horror, animation, fantasy, afro-futurism, period dramas, as well as many yet to be defined.

If you're serious, willing to work hard, and intentional about screenwriting, we encourage you to apply for membership.

The OBS Difference

Membership won't cost you a cent; but it's very expensive

With an entire cottage industry of gurus, organizations, clubs, workshops, festivals, and displaced professionals promising easy paths to representation and successful screenwriting careers for a fee, OBS went in a different direction. We're an all volunteer organization that accepts no outside money and we don't charge our members a dime. However, we expect every member to earn the privilege of membership.

OBS uses a proprietary "stars" system to track member's contribution to the community.  By remaining engaged and doing the things you need to do to be a better screenwriter, you can earn enough stars to keep your membership free of any financial obligation.  Yet, you'll have to really work hard to earn those stars.  Apply today, if approved, you'll learn more during orientation.

What Our Members Say

The OBS community is like no other.  As a horror writer and veteran of many workshops, competitions, and communities, I can say with confidence what OBS offers can't be found any where else.

Sandra

Feature, TV WRITER and Podcast host

The relationships I've developed over my many years of membership in OBS have shaped my life and career in ways you could never pay for.  The resources, information, encouragement, and accountability have really helped.

Zelie

Feature, TV writer, director and editor

There are dozens of places you can go to network or even learn the craft. OBS fills the gap for black writers who have a unique journey in film, television, and even as content creators.  The community effort and mission reflects where we should be in all aspects of society.
