OUR MISSION During our 20 years in Los Angeles, OBS has formed alliances in the motion picture and network television industry in order to open doors for our members. For the 2009 contest season The CW, Our Stories Films, and Overbrook Entertainment are interested in reading our winning scripts.
The CW is the new network consolidated from The WB and UPN. UPN provided jobs for the majority of experienced African-American show runners and series producers working in Hollywood today. OBS is grateful that Traci Blackwell, The CW’s Director of Current Programming, recognizes the quality and talent of writers within the ranks of OBS. Traci is back for the third year, and will again read the TOP TWO original TV scripts.
Our Stories Films, a joint venture between Bob Johnson and The Weinstein Company, previously of Disney/Miramax fame, is dedicated to developing family friendly urban comedies that cover a broad spectrum of the African-American experience. Our Stories will receive our top feature film submission.
Overbrook Entertainment has produced many international blockbusters. As producers of both episodic television and feature films, we are happy that Overbrook is aware of the talent within OBS. As a result, Holly Brown, Film Development Coordinator, Overbrook Entertainment, will read the TOP TWO winning feature length entries, as well as the TOP TWO TV entries!

2009 OBS Original Script Contest ** NOTE: An unsolicited (unrepresented) script submission to film and TV producers is the grand prize here. As a general rule, unsolicited script submissions are NOT read. Your association with OBS and the access to entertainment industry executives we’ve facilitated is the grand prize in this contest. This is a great opportunity for unrepresented screenwriters.
* NOTE: Submitting original screenplays and original ideas is a part of creating opportunity for oneself as a professional. The companies mentioned above will ask that a submission agreement be signed by the writer before any script is read. If for any reason a writer is disinclined to submit their original WGA registered or Copyrighted work to this contest, they should refrain from doing so.
* NOTE: Creative executives work for production companies and movie studios on a contract basis. It is possible but unprecedented, that a participating executive may change employment during a contest period. In such a case OBS cannot guarantee the participation of any executive or company listed in these contest documents.
FGA’s (Frequently Given Answers) 1.) FED EX submissions are discouraged. Certified US mail is preferable if you require a proof of receipt.
2.) Scripts will not be returned. They will be recycled at contests end. Winners are advised to produce an unaltered fresh copy for submission to production companies as the entered copy will likely be marked up and show handling.
3.) In the amazing event that the participating executive is interested in offering an option or sale of your script, writer should seek representation of an agent or entertainment lawyer. OBS can help with recommending an Entertainment Lawyer.
4.) We did not include “Reality TV” concepts in this contest because rights to such concepts are harder to defend and create greater liability for all parties.
5.) Writers want access to creative executives because “getting read” is crucial and necessary in gaining any other professional opportunity as a screenwriter.
6.) Winners who are not local to the Los Angeles area should expect a phone meeting from the participating creative executive.
7.) No winners or participants in this contest are guaranteed employment or script sales from this opportunity. The benefit here is the access all writers crave and pursue. This is especially precious if one is currently unrepresented.
8.) The staged reading will not exceed 45 pages (TV), or 35 pages (features).
